United Kingdom backtracks on reopening schools

The UK government has been forced to backtrack on the reopening of classrooms, all London primary schools will now remain closed following pressure from council leaders.

Education Secretary Gavin Wilson said children’s education and wellbeing is a “national priority” and moving parts of London to remote education is a “last resort and a temporary solution”.

The decision is a blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s push to see schools open as planned, while the government has insisted it is a response to rapidly increasing rates of coronavirus infection.
