Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “never let a good crisis go to waste”, is as apt in the era of COVID-19 as it was during WWII while nations use the pandemic and potential vaccine to gain power and influence, says Sky News host Brent O’Halloran.

“China and Russia in particular have been using their vaccine candidate to form closer ties with nations, and test ties with the West,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“More than a dozen countries have signed deals with China to test one or more of the five vaccine candidates being developed there.

“Russian officials claim to have provisional orders from some fifty countries for 1.2 billion doses of its Sputnik V in the next year.”

Mr O’Halloran also noted analysts had argued these vaccine arrangements could bring more nations “under the thumb of Beijing or Moscow”.
