The Lawyer X Royal Commission’s recommendation to establish a special investigator to look into potential criminal conduct by police force members involved as well as Nicola Gobbo is a “watershed moment,” says The Herald Sun’s Patrick Carlyon.

The royal commission’s final report – handed down by Justice Margaret McMurdo – recommended the establishment of a special investigator to determine whether both Ms Gobbo and the officers involved committed crimes.

Ms Gobbo was revealed to be the person at the centre of the Lawyer X scandal for her role as a police informer whilst representing key players in Melbourne’s gangland war.

Justice McMurdo’s report – which included 110 other recommendations – found Ms Gobbo’s position as an informer for Victoria Police as “inexcusable”.

The report prompted Victorian Chief Police Commissioner Shane Patton to establish the ‘Taskforce Reset’ to investigate the findings outlined in the report.

Mr Carlyon told Sky News Monday’s findings were a “watershed moment in what’s really been a very long-running saga”.
