Sky News host Paul Murray says of all the ‘isms’ spoken about in Australia, ageism is doing the “most damage” compared to all the others.
“Now of all of the different ‘isms’ that we talk about and are told are bad for our country, there is one ‘ism’ that I will absolutely underline is bad for our country,” Mr Murray said.
“And it is the one that I believe does the most damage compared to all of the other ‘isms’ that we keep being told about”.
“I think ageism is the biggest problem that actually people suffer from in Australia,” he said.
The final recommendations of the aged care royal commission were released on Monday prompting the Morrison government to immediately respond with an interim $452 million funding package.
The recommendations included the creation of a new Aged Care Act and an inspector-general, urgent review of care standards, clearing 100,000 Australians from the home care package waiting list, and a new ‘care at home’ subsidised government service.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the $452 million package which focused on more funding for aged care providers and funding to increase personal care workers in response to the Royal Commission’s findings.
“When people are left behind by our political system, left behind by our cultural system, left behind by our media system, that’s ageism,” Mr Murray said.
“That’s the ‘ism’ that I say is the most dangerous in the country”.
