Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says Australia cannot afford increases to welfare and similar social programs without “industries like coal”.
It comes as the Morrison government announced it will increase the rate of JobSeeker by $50 a fortnight which is estimated to cost just over $2 billion a year.
The Minerals Council of NSW also announced today coal exports are expected to increase by $6 billion this year which could bring an extra $2 billion in tax revenue.
Mr Canavan said it is a “really nice day to draw this analogy” given the coal industry has announced it likely will contribute an extra $2 billion in taxes the same day the government announces a $2 billion welfare bill.
“All those people out there calling for a welfare increase and maybe a doll increase more than $50 a fortnight, well you can’t pay the bills for these sort of things without industries like coal.”
