Tropical Cyclone Kimi intensifies to category two system

Tropical Cyclone Kimi has intensified to a category two system and is currently gathering strength off the coast of Far North Queensland.

Cyclone Kimi is no longer expected to cross the coast and make landfall; however forecasters still believe its effects will be felt.

The tropical cyclone is expected to whip up destructive winds and produce rainfalls of up to 100 millimetres in some areas.

Emergency services have received about 80 calls for help.
