NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham says there is an “ignorance on the left of politics” about the immense amount of caring public service which Margaret Court has carried out.
It comes as Ms Court and the Australian Government have come under fire following a leak which revealed the tennis great will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) at the Australia Day honours.
She has been subject to intense criticism in recent years for her controversial comments and beliefs on same-sex-marriage and transgender issues.
“She should be given Australia’s highest honour,” Mr Latham told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
He spoke of Ms Court’s “wonderful caring social justice service” which has done in the outer suburbs of Perth to aid the needy and vulnerable.
“Margaret Court has done much more to help the needy, the vulnerable, the disadvantaged in our community, than all her critics combined,” he said.
“There’s an amazing ignorance on the left of politics about that dimension of work.”
