There is an “overwhelming sense of relief” from the community conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin on all three charges for the killing of George Floyd in May last year, according to Sky News contributor Michael Ware.
“This is an American story, America just exhaled almost for the first time since May 25 last year, the country has been on edge particularly during the weeks of this trial,” he told Sky News.
Mr Ware said there was a question as to whether this verdict would “become a Watershed moment” as it is the first time a police officer has been convicted of killing a Black man in Minnesota.
“Anyone who saw the video of George Floyd’s death knew that it was wrong so everyone has been on tenterhooks.”
“Finally there’s a sense of a calm, there’s an outpouring of joy that justice has been seen to be done.”
