The government should ‘promote home ownership’ over super as ownership rates drop

The Australian’s Judith Sloan says it would be better for the government to promote home ownership over superannuation as the number of homeowners over the age of 44 has dropped significantly.

“That, I think, is a concern because it seem to me that if someone hasn’t got a house by the age of 44 they may not necessarily get one so I think this is a pattern of movement that’s really worth politicians having a good look at,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

Ms Sloan also said the “most significant factor of poverty” in people over 65 was people who either do not own their own homes or are renting in the private sector.

“The government is better to promote home ownership at this point rather than superannuation.”
