As European temperature records are smashed yet again in 2019 amid another searing heatwave, it is only the latest phase in an ever warmer world. In 2018, Germany sweated through the throes of another record-breaking swelter. For seaside resorts, it was a boon. But farmers feared massive crop losses and demanded billions in aid.
High temperatures across the country – good news for some but a disaster for others. The scene was almost apocalyptic at some German farms: burning grain fields, dried-up soil and withered crops. In some areas, nothing grew at all, while life stock suffered in the dry heat. Home gardeners desperately watered their plants while city authorities called on residents to water the trees in the streets. Barbecues were banned due to the risk of wildfires in many of Germany’s city parks, and fireworks displays had to be canceled. As temperatures soar yet again this year, there seems to be no end to the rising heat.
