Scott Morrison is going ‘the populist way’ ahead of federal election

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the prime minister is going “the populist way” and not fighting state premiers on lockdowns as Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says he will put a bill forward to extend the state of emergency.

“It looks like Scott Morrison has given up on this, he knows there’s an election ahead, he knows every times he picks fight with one of these premiers he knows it costs him one or two points in that state,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr Clennell also said he was surprised the premiers “have such support for putting draconian measures” on their states and says Mr Morrison may have “lost the spark” for fighting the premiers over their strong lockdowns.

“He’s going the populist way, he’s going to support these short sharp lockdowns, he sees no point in fighting the premiers anymore.”
