Burglaries are on the rise in Germany, but few of the cases are solved. Heike Schröder and Silvio Baumgart from Berlin’s crime prevention squad are part of a rapid-response unit. They hope to improve the statistics.
There are six crime-scene units in Berlin. If a burglary is reported, the unit’s officers are always the first on the scene. It’s their job to look for evidence and interview the victims. The information might also help solve other cases, because a repeat offender could be involved.
The number of break-ins is high, so the police are under pressure. At present, there are 170,000 burglaries in Germany a year — but just 15-percent of those cases are solved. How can the investigators improve on that record?
