Infectious Diseases Professor Peter Collignon says while Victoria has finally been declared coronavirus-free, New South Wales achieved a similar outcome with far fewer restrictions.
Victoria recorded its 28th consecutive day of zero new cases, deaths and community transmission – meeting the threshold to move to a COVID-normal state.
“New South Wales is probably coronavirus free as well, at least if you take no community transmission for a long period of time,” Professor Collignon told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“And I think New South Wales has achieved that with a lot less restrictions in place than Victoria.”
Professor Collignon said we have “got to learn” from this and “look at what restrictions we’ve had in place”.
“The end result is we want very little or no coronavirus transmission in Australia,” he said.
“But we’ve achieved that really throughout Australia … and its all been done with various levels of restrictions.”
