Alice Springs Deputy Mayor Jacinta Price says the decision to change a lyric in Australia’s national anthem is likely an “attempt to appease the loud minority”.
It comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the second line of Advance Australia Fair will be changed from Friday January 1.
The line “for we are young and free” will be replaced by “one and free”, in an attempt to recognise Indigenous history.
“I think the decision to change the word in the anthem is more likely an attempt to appease the loud minority of activists and those whose priority is around things like the anthem, symbolism, but also like constitutional recognition, the voice and those sorts of issues,” Ms Price told Sky News.
“Their priority is not necessarily issues like reducing family and domestic violence and upholding the human rights of indigenous women and children unfortunately.”
