9 – Immortal Jellyfish
Immortal jellyfish are the type of animal that lives up to their name. Yes, theoretically, they can live forever! Here’s an interesting fact, the technical name for the stage of a jellyfish’s life when it swims freely is medusa. Yep, the same Medusa as the Versace symbol! I’m sure you can see the similarities.
8 – Scaly-foot snail
You’ve most likely seen many kinds of snails before, but these guys are special. What distinguishes most snails is their calcified shells of varying strengths. But the scaly-foot snail has got to be the strongest snail ever! Its shell is literally made of iron! It dwells in places such as the indian ocean and this shell is the ultimate security blanket!
7 – Emperor penguin
If you think animal dads don’t do much for the kids, well, emperor penguin dads may change your mind! Emperor penguins are a unique breed of penguins who dwell on the fringes of Antarctica. They live, feed and breed on frozen ice and they’re one of the most unique birds on our planet. That’s because they’re one tough species of penguins.
6 – Yeti crab
Yeti crabs are named after Yeti’s, mythical creatures that’s basically the polar version of bigfoot. First discovered in 2006, they share a symbiotic relationship with the bacteria that grows on their arms and other body parts! Basically yeti crabs are farming these bacteria for food. Except they don’t eat all the bacteria on their arms.
5 – Bar headed goose
Bar-headed geese are named because well, they have two brownish-black bars at the back of their head! What’s so special about bar-headed geese? They’re the lords of flight for birds! This is because they can fly for long distances under strenuous climates at extremely high altitudes.
4 – Honey Badger
Okay, honey badgers OF COURSE made this list! They’re easily one of the fiercest animals you’d ever come across. If there were a UFC for animal fighting, they’d probably be #1 pound for pound! They live in a world of their own and strictly mark out their territory wherever they go. Other animals much bigger than them are wary of them!
3 – Tardigrade
This little guy is an extremely small organism that’s actually invisible to the naked eye. You can only see it through a microscope! You’re probably wondering, What makes a tardigrade one of the toughest animals on Earth? Through numerous research studies, tardigrades have been exposed to various experimental procedures that have earned them the tag of the most invincible animal on the planet. They’re totally indestructible!
2 – Mountain stone weta
Here’s a bit of a warning, if you’re not into big insects, it’s time to look away! Mountain stone weta are some of the world’s large insects. They have the physical characteristics of a grasshopper, except they’re just bigger. They have spines that they use in protecting themselves from predators, and they themselves are predators of other insects. But all this isn’t what makes them special.
1 – Glass sponge
Glass sponges are one of the strangests animals on the planet. They have skeletons made from silicon. Glass sponges look like giant, underwater reeds that can grow up to 10 feet tall! But what makes them special isn’t their looks, but rather their longevity. Sponges like the glass sponge have lived in the oceans for millions of years.
