The crew talks about where and how the platform was built, and is tasked with lifting a massive pipe from the bottom of the seabed that weighs tonnes. How do they pull it off? We find out why seaman Dmitry Lobanov likes the platform more than the ships he’s worked on. What is driller Sergey Kharakhorkin responsible for and why doesn’t it allow him to be “a nice guy”? How big are the losses when the drilling grinds to a halt? How long does he think it will take the team to become a truly efficient team?
Russia’s ‘Polar Star’ drilling rig is among the biggest in the world, able to drill to unprecedented depths. The platform’s crew spend their days working with massive equipment on an artificial island exposed to the elements in the subarctic sea. Fortunes rest on striking gas in just 30 days, before the winter closes in. It’s a job that calls for discipline, determination and nerves of steel in an environment that can be deadly.
