Dick Smith says Australia’s billionaires are lobbying the government to increase immigration, but unlimited population growth is unsustainable as it will lead to far greater joblessness.
Mr Smith said there are billionaires who are driving for endless migration growth which results in continued economic growth but “endless growth is impossible, it’s a finite world”.
“What we need is a proper plan, we need an open discussion, we need our prime minister to show leadership,” he said.
Pre-Coronavirus population growth sat at around 1.3 per cent per annum which would see Australia’s population reach approximately 100 million at century’s end.
“We need to go back to 75,000 a year, that will level out our population about 30 million or slightly under 30 million. That sounds like a pretty good number for me,” Mr Smith told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
The COVID pandemic has hit Australia’s unemployment figures extremely hard seeing one million Australians unemployed.
Mr Smith argues that greater population growth will only further deepen Australia’s jobs crisis.
“The more and more people you have the more people you’re going to have out of jobs because with automation and robotics there are less jobs available.”
