Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon says the Labor Party “shouldn’t expect to win” the next federal election if it doesn’t return to the sensible centre, support its traditional base and go into the election campaign with more moderate and inclusive language.
It comes after 30 right Labor frontbench MPs, unionists and faction activists penned essays in a book titled ‘The Write Stuff’, which discusses successive federal election losses and a call to arms for the future of the Labor Party.
“I think the party has lost its way,” Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“We were born to serve working-class people … we’ve long supported blue-collar workers in all sorts of industries including the coal and gas and oil industries.
“To win an election you have to be very diverse in your messaging … we’ve only won a majority in the House of Representatives once in the last 27 years.”
