“Breaking the SIlence”: courageous testimony, or treasonous propaganda?
“Breaking the Silence” is one of the most controversial organizations in Israel. Its members compile testimony from Israeli troops who’ve served in the Occupied Territories.
Many in Israel consider them traitors: current- and former IDF soldiers who’ve joined the organization “Breaking the Silence.” The group compiles the testimony of troops who’ve served in the Occupied Territories. Some of these reports contain allegations of misconduct. Nadav Weiman served as a sniper in an elite army unit near the Palestinian city of Nablus. Weiman comes from a military family — but he’s raised serious concerns about the Israeli occupation, and wants the public to discuss these issues. But many Israelis accuse the “Breaking the Silence” group of spreading lies, and damaging Israel’s reputation.
