Hotel quarantine is a ‘redundant scheme’ costing Victorians $1 million a day

Victorian Liberal MP Tim Smith says the $377 million spent on hotel quarantine in Victoria from September last year to present is almost “$400 million for nothing”.

“There are 10,000 Victorians as I understand it who want to return home but they can’t because of the incompetence of the Labor government,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr Smith said the staff at the hotel quarantine facilities are “twiddling their thumbs and doing nothing” but still costing taxpayers money “for a program that is basically redundant”.

“Maybe we should just wind the whole thing up and pay New South Wales to do it for us.”
