New South Wales Police Minister David Elliott says the feedback he’s received from police is that people in Greater Sydney have been “so far, so good” in adhering to new mandatory mask regulations.
The wearing of masks was made mandatory at certain indoor settings for residents in Greater Sydney in a bid to stem the spread of locally acquired cases of coronavirus in the state.
Masks are compulsory on public transport, at shopping malls, places of worship, hair and beauty salons, in gaming areas, at indoor entertainment venues and for staff at hospitality venues.
Failure to comply will see residents fined $200.
“It is day one, the police have said to me that at the moment there seems to be, as we’ve seen through the entire pandemic, there’s been general consensus that this is a good policy,” Mr Elliott told Sky News host Chris Smith.
“There’s been pretty good compliance”.
He said the government is implementing these measures because “we want the economy in New South Wales to hum as quickly and as efficiently as possible under these very difficult circumstances”.
