GPS tracking young reoffenders is a ‘step in the right direction’

President of the Queensland Police Union Ian Leavers says the proposal to place GPS trackers on juvenile reoffenders and bail breakers is a “positive step in the right direction” but hopes it will be extended to all reoffenders.

“I’d like to see anyone who breaches bail whether they be a youth or a adult the same would apply and they’d be fitted with the GPS trackers so I’m very interested to look at the success of this,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr Leavers also said youth offender rehabilitation needs to be done on every level and the children have support networks to which they can go.

“By the time it gets to the police it’s too late, we need to work with youth justice (and) child safety.”
