The Australian Financial Review’s Aaron Patrick says he thinks governments in the nation have “basically given up” on getting thousands of Australians stranded overseas back in the country before Christmas.
“There’s more who want to come in, than we can fit in,” Mr Patrick told Sky News host Sharri Markson.
He said there are 36,000 Australians overseas who want to come back home and the number is “growing by the week”.
“It’s just a terrible tragedy, borne in part of, I think, Australia’s determination to eliminate the virus,” he said.
Mr Patrick said the goal “clearly is” elimination of the virus in Australia as there is “just no appetite for even really low levels of coronavirus in the community”.
