Sky News host Paul Murray says the key vote to guarantee Daniel Andrews’ emergency powers extension was the Reason Party’s Fiona Patten despite coming out against the bill claiming “this can’t go on”.
The state of emergency powers gives the Victorian government the ability to lockdown the state in response to the coronavirus and provides the legal tool to impose restrictions such as curfews and stay-at-home orders.
The emergency powers will be extended until December which will mark nearly two years of a state of emergency in Victoria.
Ms Patten voted for the extension of Victoria’s state of emergency despite there being “no guarantee that one case won’t result in a lockdown,” Mr Murray said.
“Despite the fact that the curfew could be put in place even though the police didn’t want it, Bambi Eyes (Brett Sutton) didn’t want it, the premier wanted it,” he said.
“When the people of regional Victoria can just be locked out of normal life because the premier can’t be stuffed putting the ring of steel back in place.”
