News Corp National Personal Finance Writer Sophie Elsworth says the early access super scheme has been a “political football” as it is set to end on December 31.
More than three million people have accessed approximately $37.5 billion since April due to financial hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The figure falls short of the $42 billion the government had forecast in withdrawals before the scheme finishes.
“This has been a political football,” Ms Elsworth told Sky News.
“We had the Coalition saying ‘happy days you can dip into that retirement savings’.
“And the federal opposition were very upset about this.
“So there’s been a lot hustle and tussle between the two parties disputing over whether or not this should have been allowed in the first place.”
