Sky News Washington correspondent Annelise Nielsen says the “anticipation was palpable” in Minneapolis before Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict was announced but the decision alone “won’t be able to heal that schism” in the United States.
Former police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of all three charges against him over the death of George Floyd last year.
After deliberating for 10 hours, the jury found Mr Chauvin guilty of unintentional second-degree murder while committing a felony, as well as guilty of third-degree murder perpetrating an eminently dangerous act.
President Joe Biden said George Floyd’s murder in the full light of the day “ripped the blinders off” for the whole world to see.
“The systemic racism is a stain on our nation’s soul”.
