Customers are “paying extra” for card usage as cash payments are often refused

More people are using card payments as during the pandemic businesses often refuse to accept cash but card users are getting hit by hidden fees every transaction.

News Corp National Personal Finance Writer Sophie Elsworth says businesses can charge a “reasonable cost” for card payments, often about one per cent.

“Businesses can actually refuse cash but the catch here is they have to only charge fees with card that are a reasonable cost incurred by the business,” she told Sky News.

“People are in many cases paying extra for tapping at the checkout.”
