Australia Day is ‘very important on our calendars’

Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou says Australia Day “is a day that we should be celebrating” as citizenship ceremonies were conducted despite his area being labelled a COVID-19 hotspot by the Victorian government.

“We definitely did go ahead with the citizenship ceremonies, this is a day that we should be celebrating and very important in the calendar so it’s vital we go ahead and induct new citizens,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

Mr Christou said elected officials “need to show a bit of backbone” when the question of cancelling Australia Day celebrations arises.

“If your council management or staff come to you and say ‘we need to cancel Australia Day this year in October,’ you need to give them a pushback.”
