ABC gossip commentator Paul Barry used “deceptively edited” video on his Media Watch show to “deliberately” spread fake news.
Sky News host Chris Kenny says Mr Barry – who hosts Australia’s most expensive and dishonest television show – published a deceptively edited video making it look like he called the US election for President Donald Trump.
Mr Kenny has lodged a formal complaint with the national broadcaster over its false reporting.
In the full, unedited video, Mr Kenny was actually commenting on the lack of a landslide victory for Joe Biden, even though the ABC predicted a Democratic blue wave.
Mr Kenny also repeatedly said in the video that the election was too close to call.
However, Mr Barry’s team edited out those comments. In fact, Media Watch edited out at least 10 instances when Mr Kenny said it was too early to call the election and the outcome was uncertain.
“He knows my live commentary deep into that election night argued the strong showing by Trump was a win for the mainstream, no matter who won the election,” Mr Kenny said.
“And that at Sky we told you it would be the case, we told you many mainstream voters would stand by Trump. That was my whole thesis.
“And just to prove the point, here are some of the bits from that very same clip, this is the very same live editorial that Barry must have watched, and then deceptively edited to give a false impression, to create some fake news.”
Mr Kenny said the fake news published by Mr Barry showed the ABC had no accountability to be accurate with tax dollars.
“Now believe me, after all the filth and lies the ABC has thrown at me over the decades, simply because I dare to challenge them and their world view, this is all water off a duck’s back,” Mr Kenny said.
“The point is what does it say about accountability, what does it say about their commitment to truth and facts, and what does it say about how they are willing to abuse the very tax dollars that we give them.”
