‘This is a massive political and bureaucratic failure’: Alan Jones

Sky News host Alan Jones discusses the need for better school infrastructure reform with NSW Police Minister David Elliott and Shadow Transport Minister Chris Minns.

Mr Jones said not only is there a “crisis” inside a classroom, there is also a crisis in “finding” a classroom – amid a “massive political and bureaucratic failure” on behalf of the Liberal government.

“This is a massive political and bureaucratic failure because from mid-2019 the NSW government set a student population for each school based on the number of permanent buildings,” he said.

“And parents can’t enrol children in schools out of their immediate catchment areas, so principals have to take on new students who live in the school zone.”

Mr Alan Jones asked Mr Minns if this was also the Labor Party’s policy stance.

“No I think you’ve hit the nail on the head,” Mr Minns said.

“The auditor-general actually released a report on this last week where she showed that the majority of schools are being built or rebuilt because of government pork-barrelling rather than where the population growth is.

“So you’ve got a situation where Oran Park public school is 400 kids over the cap and The Ponds public school is 20 per cent over the cap – and Gregory Hills should have a high school doesn’t have one at all.

“So you’ve got a situation particularly in the south-west and the north-west where people are moving in, young families are moving into new housing estates being promised infrastructure – and at the end of the day their kids are graduating before anything’s being built.”
