This year marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks which triggered the so-called war on terror. Australian soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan and then to Iraq, conflicts that continue in some form to this day.
Back home, the 9/11 attacks marked the start of a hostile new age for many Muslim Australians. They faced increased surveillance, media media rhetoric and a rise in Islamophobia.
As The Drum’s Bethan Smoleniec found out, these were searing experiences for many young Muslims.
And a warning: Some may find this footage distressing.
Those ripple effects of September 11 are explored by academic and writer, Randa Abdel-Fattah, in her new book, Coming Of Age In The War Of Terror.
