Former Liberal MP Dr David Kemp AC says it is important to remember the arrival of the First Fleet did not come with “harsh attitudes towards the Aboriginal people” and settlers were told to treat Indigenous peoples with kindness.
“Arthur Phillip’s instruction told them to engage with the Aboriginal people, to treat them with amity and kindness,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
Dr Kemp said an aim of the settlement was to have Indigenous people “become full British citizens with all the rights and equal rights” of the new arrivals, and this idea of equality has continued.
“The ideas that came then in 1788 are the ideas that have made Australia such a tremendous country to live in … ideas of the rule of law, ideas of everyone being equal before the law.”
